About Bill Audit Training

Why is it important to audit your telecom services?

While telecom companies make an attempt to charge their wholesale and retail customers correctly, billing errors are inevitable because most companies totally rely on their automated systems to produce their bills. These billing systems rely heavily on the use of codes to calculate the charges for each bill, so if a provisioner or programmer makes even one mistake, it can adversely effect your charges.

Since it would be much too costly to check each bill for accuracy, most companies rely on their customers to review their own bills and notify them if an error occurs. Therefore, if your company or organization doesn't have someone reviewing your bills each month, chances are very high that you are paying more than you need to for your services.

Why is it better to have someone experienced in the telecom industry advice you on how to read and audit your bills?

Telecom services are provisioned almost exclusively through the use of codes. When a new service has been installed, these codes flow down into the billing system and generate another code called a USOC, which is the code that specifies the billing rate of each component. In most cases, a service has more than one billing component. For example, a muxed DS1 is made up channel termination(s), transport mileage and a muxing charge. The first time this muxed DS1 is billed, you will see the USOC and rate for each component of the DS1, but after that the bill will only note the combined rate for that particular DS1. In order to verify that you are being charged the correct amount, the person auditing the bills must review the price of each component listed in the Customer Service Record and/or Design Layout Record. If the person reviewing your bills is NOT checking the "per component" price for each circuit, chances are very high that you are being charged the wrong rate for your services.
